Perhaps one of the greatest success stories in wine in the past few decades, has been the meteoric rise of the so-called 'Super Tuscans'. Though Italy's noble grapes and regions (think Nebbiolo from Barolo or Barbaresco or Sangiovese from Chianti or Montalcino) remain the focus for more classical Italian wine lovers; the Super Tuscans which use grapes or techniques which fall outside the traditional rules, have become a much loved category for both drinkers and investors alike. Some of the chief architects in this have been Peiro Antinori and Mario Incisa Della Rochetta who were amongst the first to extol the virtues of international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and its suitability to Tuscany. The likes of Solaia, Masseto, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Tignanello, Redigaffi, Biserno and Le Macchiole have become huge brands which attract global attention. Equally, their 'second' wines, in our view, offer some of the greatest value drinking anywhere in the world of wine.
